Diabetes
What is diabetes mellitus? Diabetes is a condition as a result of which the body does not secrete insulin or does not respond to it properly.
There are three major types of diabetes:
• Type 1 diabetes or juvenile diabetes.
• Type 2 diabetes or adult diabetes.
• Gestational diabetes.
In the past, when scientific diagnosis of the diabetes type was yet unavailable, it was determined that when diagnosed prior to the age of 18 the condition was to be considered juvenile diabetes, whereas when diagnosed after the age of 18 – it was deemed adult diabetes.
As a result, many received medical treatment incompatible with the actual condition of their health. Nowadays, the type of diabetes is determined by means of a laboratory tests – C-peptide and GAD.
Diabetes symptoms:
increased thirst, increased urination, fatigue, weight loss, increased hunger and acetone odor on the breath. Simultaneous appearance of all symptoms is not likely to take place, since it depends on the type of the condition and the stage of its development.
One of the most important and basic strategies to attain balance in diabetics is proper consumption of carbohydrates, accounting for the amount most suitable to the type of diabetes and treatment.
It is not enough to determine the quality of the carbohydrate (using the glycemic index), one must likewise account for the quantity.
This renders carbohydrate counting very important to diabetics, especially those treated with medicaments that increase pancreas activity and insulin secretion. A balanced condition is essential to avoid complications resulting from diabetes.
